CREATIVE TOOLS: Concrete and photography
Concrete and photography are two different things that share a common characteristic: they are meant to last. By taking pictures, we preserve memories. By using concrete in construction, we create strong foundations that will last for centuries. Concrete dates back several thousand years before Christ and has been used more than any other man-made material in the world. Everything in our world is temporary, but we want sustainability and durability so much. Transferring a digital image to paper, and then from paper to concrete, makes me think about the fact that a solidified memory in a concrete slab acquires a new, long-lasting value and can be moved to new spaces.
I decided to use images of my hometown for this project since Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is celebrating its 700th anniversary this year. And the verses from the Holy Bible are a reminder that the prosperity and security of our city, and the well-being of all of us, depends first and foremost on our Creator – Almighty God. They are flashes of hope that can illuminate every dark corner and bring a new life to all the old ruins, both in our city and in our personal lives. May this exhibition be my way of saying that Vilnius is MEANT TO LAS.
